«In tv, certo.

FERRE REGGERS IS A NEW ALLIANZ MILANO PLAYER

MILAN – Following in the footsteps of Romelu Lukaku or perhaps better Kevin Klinkenberg (who wore the Revivre Milano jersey in the 2017/18 championship) Belgian opposite Ferre Reggers is ready to experience his first season away from home. Not yet 20 years old, Reggers has already imposed himself for a couple of years to the attention of the major European volleyball clubs. Many will remember how in the U21 World Championship in Cagliari in 2021 he was included in the ideal sextet together with the young Italian rainbow champion, Paolo Porro, whom he will now meet again in Milan. The other setter who impressed insiders that year was a certain Alex Nikolov, now at Lube. Here are Ferre Reggers’ first words as an Allianz Milano player.

Can you tell us briefly about you, going over the last steps of your career so far?
«My career? That’s a big word, I’ll be 20 years old this summer (Ferre Reggers was born on 18 July 2003) let’s say I’m still very young. I played the last two seasons with Maaseik, now I think I’m ready to make the big jump to Milan».

What do you think of the Italian Superleague? Have you seen any matches this year?
«It has always been my dream to play in the Italian Superleague. Yes I watched a lot of matches of Italian teams in the last year, both league and European Cups. It is the best league in Europe and in the whole world. I’m really looking forward to getting started».

Do you already know Milan both as a city and from a sporting point of view?
«No, I haven’t been to Milan yet, for now I have to rely on the stories of many friends who have already been there. They told me it’s a great city and definitely beautiful. I am also really happy because now I will have the opportunity to live there, hopefully for a few years in a solid reality like the club of president Lucio Fusaro».

In the recent European and World Championships you played against Paolo Porro, what are your memories of the tournaments and matches against Italy?
«Yes, I played against Paolo Porro and his Italy twice, once at the European Championships and once at the World Championships. For me, at his age, he is already one of the best setters in the world. Everyone knows that he has great talent and I am now looking forward to playing with Paolo. Also from a human point of view he has always given me the impression that he is a good guy. Overall, I think I will get on very well with the whole group».

Did you follow the team last season, did you see any play-off games?
«On TV, sure. Well, I couldn’t follow the games live because they were often at the same time as our championship matches. But I always tried to catch up afterwards. The level of play is really high. Coach Piazza’s team really surprised me with the way they managed to hold their own against Perugia and Civitanova in the playoffs. It eliminated Perugia and was one step away from taking out Civitanova as well, which it beat anyway. Maybe I have already said it, but really the level is very high here».

What is your best quality as a player?
«I think without a doubt it’s elevation. I know that for the opposite role I’m still not a very powerful player, but let’s say I’m working on improving from that point of view too. Another positive characteristic of mine I think is having a very good sense of the match. Even in difficult situations I can be entrusted with the balls, the hot ones. I think this is an important quality».

Have you already spoken with coach Roberto Piazza?
«Yes, of course, at the moment only on the phone. In the world of international volleyball he is esteemed and respected. Many consider him a tough coach, very strict. I think he is a great coach, but also a very good person. I will certainly have a lot to learn from him. In August there is a friendly match between my national team, Belgium, and Holland. Piazza will be on the opposing bench, we will meet there».

Have you already started studying a bit of Italian?
«Yes, I’ve started to study your language a little. I hope to be able to speak a little Italian when I arrive in Milan. It will be crucial for me to be able to communicate off the pitch too. After the first attempts, I have to say that it’s not a very easy language to learn, but my goal is to be able to do it by the time I arrive in Milan».
